24 Forms of Vishnu and His Consorts




In the Siddhārtha-saṁhitā, there is a description of the twenty-four forms of Viṣṇu, and these forms are named according to the position of the symbolic representations in Their four hands. When one describes the positions of objects in the hands of the Viṣṇu mūrti, one should begin with the lower right hand then move to the upper right hand, upper left hand and, finally, to the lower left hand. In this way,
  1. Vāsudeva may be described as being represented by mace, conch shell, disc and lotus flower; 
  2. Saṅkarṣaṇa is represented by mace, conch shell, lotus flower and disc. Similarly; 
  3. Pradyumna is represented by disc, conch shell, mace and lotus flower; 
  4. Aniruddha is represented by disc, mace, conch shell and lotus flower.                      In the spiritual sky the representations of Nārāyaṇa are twenty in number and are described as follows: 
  5. Śrī Keśava (flower, conch shell, disc, mace); 
  6.  Nārāyaṇa (conch, flower, mace and disc); 
  7. Śrī Mādhava (mace, disc, conch and flower); 
  8. Śrī Govinda (disc, mace, flower and conch); 
  9. Viṣṇu-mūrti (mace, flower, conch and disc); 
  10. Madhusūdana (disc, conch, flower and mace);
  11. Trivikrama (flower, mace, disc and shell); 
  12. Śrī Vāmana (conch, disc, mace and flower);
  13. Śrīdhara (flower, disc, mace and shell); 
  14. Hṛṣīkeśa (mace, disc, flower and conch); 
  15. Padmanābha (shell, flower, disc and mace); 
  16. Dāmodara (flower, disc, mace and shell); 
  17. Puruṣottama (disc, flower, shell and mace); 
  18. Acyuta (mace, flower, disc and shell); 
  19. Nṛsiṁha (disc, flower, mace and shell); 
  20. Janārdana (flower, disc, shell and mace); 
  21. Śrī Hari (shell, disc, flower and mace); 
  22. Śrī Kṛṣṇa (shell, mace, flower and disc); 
  23. Adhokṣaja (flower, mace, shell and disc), and; 
  24. Upendra (shell, mace, disc and flower).

  11. padmanabha The navel which contains the universe sraddha faith
  12. damodara He who contains the universe in his belly lajja modesty
  13. vasudeva He who pervades and sports lakshmi she who observes
  14. sankarshana He who draws others near him. sarasvati she who comforts
  15. pradyumna The illuminator priti she who love
  16. aniruddha The irresistible rati amorous enjoyment,sexual-pleasure
  17. purushottama The Supreme being vasudha wealth producing
  18. janardana The protector from negative forces. uma tranquility,quiet
  19. adhokshaja The one who is never diminished, or decreased smrti perfect mindfulness or memory
  20. upendra The younger brother of Indra kshama forgiveness
  21. narasimha The one who assumes the celestial man-lion form vidyuta flashing, glittering
  22. hari The one who accepts oblations, or the remover of sin. shuddhi purity
  23. acyuta He who never falls from his status. vijaya victory, success, achievement
  24. krshna He who is exceedingly delighted with his own Lila. buddhi intelligence
